Zeo Tasting Notes

To create any product you need inspiration. An idea can stem from something that already exists or it can exploit a gap in a market which you may think there is no more room. One of the latest brands to hit the UK market is ZEO. The result of several years of hard work by their master blenders who were ‘inspired’ to create a new type of drink. They looked for a drink that is sophisticated, created in the spirit of alcohol (although free from it) and has that wonderful piece of information which seems to grace all types of menus these days, only 38 calories! ZEO says it has created something new, an ‘unalcoholic drink.’

Designed to be drunk straight over ice, this unique mixer can be garnished with a variety of plants including mint, rosemary or coriander which has given mixologists the chance to create some fine cocktails to showcase ZEO.

But before we come on to that, below are my tasting notes –

ZEO

An inviting nose of grapefruit and red berries blend well. Soft on the palate with a slight tint of perfumed berries lingering. Short offering however.

Rather unusual compared to your standard mixers, but one that has caught the imagination of mixologists down in London –

ZEO Spritz

Glass –

Wine

Ingredients –

Bottle ZEO
40ml Aperol
10ml Sugar syrup
1 large tangerine peel twist

Method –

Pour the Aperol into glass, add sugar syrup, twist the peel and drop into the glass, then add ice to the top, top up with ZEO and stir lightly to mix.

I’m not a huge fan of sparkling water mixers myself, especially if added to cocktails, but the buzz about ZEO over the past couple of weeks seems to come across as something that will work in this ever-changing bar scene.

Look out, ZEO is coming.
