In her eighth feature under ‘Emily Says . . .’, the voice to the Manchester bar scene in Emily Puckering looks at her visit to Australia;

For those who haven’t noticed my absence in the last month, I spent eleven days in Adelaide, South Australia fulfilling my duties as a bridesmaid for my childhood best friend. As amazing and as honourable this role and trip was, it was an exhausting journey back to Manchester and jet lag truly took advantage of me. Not to mention being thrown back into the late bartending shifts the minute I stepped foot off the plane from that twenty-three hour flight.

But I’m back! As is my body clock. And it would have felt rude to not bring some of the Australian sunshine back with me, even if I didn’t bring back a tan to prove it…

Being a bridesmaid is no walk in the park, and myself and my twin sister Charlotte found our days packed out with wedding rehearsals, bridal showers and overall preparations for the big day; which, by the way, payed off just beautifully. Luckily, we managed to squeeze in a day off consisting of brunch, beaches and, most importantly, beer!

South Australia homes many breweries, and we payed a visit to one of the most popular: Big Shed Brewing Co. Founded and directed by Craig Basford and Jason Harris, the pair started brewing in Jason’s shed in Barossa of Adelaide back in 2002. The shed was big enough to fit in all the necessary brewing equipment, and so began the love affair of Big Shed Brewing. Experimenting using unique ingredients from the pure curiosity of ‘what happens if…’, Craig and Jason began discussing making their passion into a business.

Finally in September of 2014, Big Shed Brewing Co launched their own tasting bar and kitchen to display and sell their products. Consisting of six taps and food that is specially paired with the different beers, this brewery is perfect for sampling, learning and even taking away their unique beers. I took away three different bottles, and here is a little summary of each of the three.

ABV: 5.5%
An overall easily drinkable and fantastic beer. Beautifully hopped with a biscuit and aromatic malt, F Yeah provides a full bodied and wonderfully hopped experience. Alongside a citrus-like aroma, there is also a firm bitterness that truly balances this beer; which is what makes APAs so wonderful! A full strength beer that can be enjoyed during any occasion thanks to its steadily balanced ABV.

ABV: 7.5%
With the West Coast USA being all about their hops, this number has naturally replicated that. The bitterness from the strong hops in this beer are backed up perfectly by citrus aromas, and even a hint of apricot. The bold flavour of this beer makes it incredibly moreish; a risky game to play with its heavy ABV of 7.5%! Perhaps not the ideal beer for a quiet get together with the family… but overall, a cracking no-nonsense IPA.

ABV: 5.4%
Something for the sweet tooth! Taking a step back from the hops and focusing on the strong infusions of toffee and honeycomb, this dessert stout is perfect for a post-meal treat. The sweet infusions give this beer a hearty and rich tasting experience, ticking all the boxes for the perfect dessert beer; with an easy going ABV too! For sipping and enjoying, this number is one to be savoured.

Sadly, Big Shed Brewing Co hasn’t appeared its face over here in the UK yet. But if anyone is planning a trip to the South of Australia, a visit to the brewery or even grabbing a bottle of two from the local liquor store shelves is an absolute must! A true taste of the South Australian sunshine, Big Shed is one not to be missed out.

Glenfiddich IPA Experiment Launches In UK On-Trade With Young’s Exclusive

glenfiddich-ipa-and-serveGlenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt whisky, officially launches the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment in the UK on-trade starting with 85 Young’s pubs across London.

The Glenfiddich IPA Experiment is the world’s first single malt Scotch whisky finished in IPA craft beer casks. A collaboration between Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, and Speyside craft brewer, Seb Jones, they worked together to pioneer a new single malt Scotch whisky imbued with zesty citrus and tangy hops from the oak casks that had previously held a bold Speyside IPA.

According to Glenfiddich Senior Brand Manager, Sarah Harding, “Since the Glenfiddich IPA Experiment launched in September 2016 in the off-trade, we have been overwhelmed by the interest from consumers and whisky connoisseurs nationwide due to the unique qualities of this experimental liquid. We are so pleased to be officially launching the Glenfiddich IPA in the UK on-trade with Young’s so more consumers can experience this collaboration between brewer, Seb Jones, and Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman.”

Gillian McLaren, Director of Marketing said “At Young’s we aim to go above and beyond when offering our consumers a range of unique drinks and experiences. Love Drinks Introduces Lowlander Beers

LOWLANDER_BOTTLE LINE UPLove Drinks, the premium spirits and beer distributor, has introduced Lowlander Beers, a brand new beer range, into their portfolio – beers brewed with botanicals.

The range will be available to taste at the Boutique Bar Show in Manchester on Wednesday 18th May.

The first Lowlander Beers were first bottled in December 2015 in their home country, the Netherlands (The name ‘Netherlands’ is derived from the Dutch word ‘Neder’ meaning ‘Low’). It took 18 long months of trial and error to perfect the recipes but Lowlander eventually ended up with three distinct flavours, all of which boast their own personality.
Lowlander Beer is inspired by the rich history of Dutch brewing combined with a passion for distilling. The Golden Age saw Dutch explorers travel the globe and return home with cargos brimming with precious herbs and spices. These botanicals soon made their way into Dutch beer, adding extra flavour.

Lowlander’s “Chief Botanical Officer”, Frederik Kampman, worked for years, both at home and abroad, in breweries and gin and genever distilleries. He says, “I entered the world of distilling and fell in love with botanicals. As a beer-lover I grew curious about what kind of characters these special flavours could give to beer.”

And so the idea for Lowlander Beer was born: beer brewed with botanicals.

Lowlander White Ale – 5% ABV: With its refreshing fruity notes, the drink is a tribute to the restless and rugged spirit of renowned Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz. An attempt to navigate the Northeast passage saw his crew fight twin terrors; polar bears and frozen beer. The White Ale, a beer style typical to the Lowlands, receives an appealing twist by spiking it with curacao orange, elderflower and chamomile giving it a fragrant fruity finish.

Lowlander I.P.A. – 6% ABV: Dutch seafarers returning from the East would often bring back monkeys, which they would sell to tavern-keepers to pay off drinking debts. Lowlander’s I.P.A., with its hints of botanicals and spice, is a tribute to those sailors’ spirit of adventure and quick thinking. Indonesian as opposed to Indian, Lowlander uses coriander and white tea to give it a citrusy, fruity and bitter taste.

Lowlander Poorter – 5% ABV: Traditionally men known as ‘poorter’s’ would haul sacks filled with herbs and spices from tradesmen’s ships to the gates of cities. This tradition has led some to argue that the ‘Porter’ style beer claimed by the British is in fact Dutch. Either way, Lowlander has brewed a typically Dutch beer with liquorice root and vanilla that delivers a robust, sweet and surprisingly drinkable Poorter.

All three Lowlander Beers have bespoke food pairings and have endless beer-tail possibilities. Lowlander White Ale can be paired with seafood, salads or spicy food. The I.P.A. works wonderfully with Asian cuisine and the Poorter can be drunk alongside roasted or grilled meats and (chocolate) desserts.

And Union

The gentleman at And Union have launched an Indian Pale Ale expression named Friday.

Brewed over a 10 week period, it’s said to be their first take on the American style IPA and joins the existing And Union range of unfiltered biers and IPA’s that are brewed in Bavaria.

But who are they actually?

Back in 2007, the trio of a father, his son and a longtime friend worked on a project to create craft lager and ales, collaborating with four small family owned Bavarian breweries, one being almost 500 years old and the youngest at only 90. Using only barley, yeast, hops and water, they create small batches that hone the aromas and flavours, something the more commercialised brands can fail on sometimes.

So how does their newest expression fare? Well below, I give to you my tasting notes –

And Union, Friday – 6.5%

Lots of ripe peach notes on the nose with plenty of deep barley and yeast aromas setting the smooth tone. A slight sharpness on the palate initially, but softens out to become a light aromatic peach flavour, wrapped with dry hopped notes and deep tropical fruit.

A tasty expression, one that is unfiltered and unpasteurized, whilst also adhering to the German purity laws (a vegan friendly IPA). Other expressions to look out for include Unflt Lager, Neu Blk, Beast of the Deep, Steph Weiss, Hand Werk and Sun Day. I’ll let your intrigued mind seek each out to find what styles they could all be.
