HENDRICK’S Carnival of Knowledge

For the first time ever, the delightfully diverting HENDRICK’S Carnival of Knowledge – a unique travelling parlour of enlightenment – will journey to the wild wilderness of Portmeirion, Wales for Festival No.6 (5th – 7th September) to bring intellectual sustenance and delightful diversions to all curiously minded individuals.

With the help of the Guerrilla Science collective, The Carnival will bring together a host of the nation’s most scientific scholars and erudite experts for two days of dynamic discoveries and titillating theories. This plethora of enlightening entertainments will encourage even the least inquisitive amongst us to once again revel in the curious and marvel at the mysteries of the mind.

Supporting this quest for palatal and scholarly stimulation, Hendrick’s Mobile Academy of Alchemical Meanderings (affectionately known to all as MA’AM) – a most unusual and luxurious travelling bar – will be on hand to provide a host of delightful Hendrick’s libations. 

On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September, this smörgåsbord of cognitive collaborations will include:    

·       Zombies I have known and loved:Famed for their obsession with brains zombies have long been part of the mainstream. Over a zombie-making workshop, Author Frank Swain takes us through the science of zombies, from dog heads brought back to life without their bodies to military interrogation techniques. Welcome to the weird and wonderful fringes of science.  Sunday 7th August, 3-4pm

·       The Power of Smell: Mice can undergo smell-induced abortions. Horses can tell how related they are to other horses by sniffing them. What about humans? Encounter the sensational power of smell with scientist Ed Bracey as he explores how our marvellous brains interpret scent, how we compare with other animals, and how smell actually works. Sunday 7th August, 1-2pm

·       Consciousness: Are you awake? Are you dreaming? How much of our world is a construction of our brain, a mere figment of our imagination? Join neuroscientist Anil Seth as he reveals what science can and cannot tell us about the mysteries of consciousness.  Saturday 6th August, 3-4pm

·       Hendrick’s Carnival of Knowledge Bar: Nourish both your mind and your taste buds in Hendrick’s Parlour Bar. Unusual characters, eye-opening wisdom and exquisite cocktails await the curiously-minded. Join us, be seated and enjoy luxuriant libations served to you by some of the world’s finest bartenders. Friday 5th – Sunday 7th August, from 10:00am–late.

The delightfully diverting HENDRICK’S Carnival of Knowledge – a unique travelling parlour of enlightenment – will offer intellectual sustenance to all minds at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe (8th – 11th August 2013).

The time has come to reawaken, revive and restore our spirit of curiosity, and once more take delight in the unique and the unusual. HENDRICK’S Carnival of Knowledge brings together the nation’s most expert experts (and erudite amateurs), to create and curate cognitive collaborations designed to stimulate the mind as well as the taste buds.

Within the decadent environs of One Royal Circus, Edinburgh, The Carnival will feature a delightful cocktail bar for all to enjoy, as well as a packed programme of interesting diversions and entertainments such as:

A Feast of Learning: Cooked & presented by The Clove Club. Prepare to have your mind & body nourished and your spirit of curiosity revived in a unique voyage of culinary discovery! Deep within the opulent surroundings of One Royal Circus, a cornucopia of curious courses, delicious cocktails and diverting entertainments will be presented for your delight and delectation by world-renowned chefs, The Clove Club. Saturday 10th August, 7.30-11pm (Tickets £65 – limited to 32 for the evening)

Edinburgh: A Literary City: Join Allan Foster, author of ‘The Literary Traveller in Scotland: A Book Lover’s Guide’, as he reveals the curious and hidden literary tales that make Edinburgh the most storied of cities. Thursday 8th August, 4:30 – 5:30pm (Tickets £12 including one delightful cocktail – limited to 30 per session)

Last Tuesday Society – Why let death get in the way of a good conversation? The Last Tuesday Society welcomes Professor Richard Wiseman for an evening of ectoplasm and uncanny spectacle as we cross over to the other side and communicate with the deceased. Don’t miss the chance to speak to Arthur Conan Doyle or quip with Oscar Wilde as tables wobble and levitate off the floor. Tickets include one delightful cocktail. Literary Salon: Damian Barr brings his celebrated Salon from Shoreditch House to Edinburgh. Join him for exclusive readings and revealing interviews with some of the world’s best writers. Granta – How to read a story: Learn how to banish stage fright to deliver a BAFTA-worthy performance with stand up comedian Viv Groskop (author of stand up memoir I laughed, I cried), Literary Death Match co-host and Executive Producer, Suzanne Azzopardi. Bring your own work to read or practice with a past Granta story. Tickets include one delightful cocktail. Sunday lunch in 2063 Project: Award winning mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana (Mr Lyan) and Shay Ola founder of the Rebel Dining Society present a curious culinary collaboration like no other. Set 50 years in the future, this short lecture followed by a thought provoking dining experience explores our relationship between sustainability and the future of the food & drink we consume. The time has come to reawaken, revive and restore our spirit of curiosity, and once more take delight in the unique and the unusual. Designed to stimulate the mind as well as the taste buds, the Carnival of Knowledge brings together the nation’s most expert experts (and erudite amateurs), to create and curate cognitive collaborations for the enrichment of mind and stimulation of soul.

 

Within the decadent environs of Angel House, Number One Brunswick Terrace, The Carnival will feature a delightful cocktail bar for all to enjoy, as well as a packed programme of interestingdiversions and entertainments such as:

  • Idlers of the Enlightenment: A Symposium with Idler Editor Tom Hodgkinson [QI’s Director of Information], John Mitchinson, and writer Mark Vernon.  Learn about the lesser-known works and hitherto concealed philosophy of ‘idlerism’ as espoused by philosophers and writers such as Rousseau and Dr Johnson – diminishing any preconceptions of the 18th century as one of hard work. Saturday 25th May, 4:15 – 5:30pm (Tickets £12 including one delightful cocktail – limited to 35 for the session) 
  • The Hour: Hosted by David Piper and Duncan McRae. “When evening quickens in the street, comes a pause in the day’s occupation that is known as the cocktail hour.” So said Bernard de Voto.  The Cocktail Hour is the most delightful ritual, and one worth considered cogitation.  Let us make our journey through the mystical hour together.  Cocktails and canapés included, of course. 24th – 27th May, from 6-7pm (Tickets £15 – limited to 35 per session)
  • The Dream Lab:Throughout the day the Enlightenment Café’s ‘Dream Laboratory’ will be open for business. Run by a fearless team of researchers, the Dream Lab investigates the stimuli that make our dreams truly remarkable. Come take a nap on our curious and unusual dream machines.Sunday 26th, 1-5pm (free admission)

  • The Mad, Bad World of Jeff Keen: William Fowler, Curator of Art Film at the BFI takes us on a journey through the life and films of Brighton-based experimental & underground filmmaker, Jeff Keen. 24thMay, 4-5pm (Tickets £12 including one delightful cocktail – limited to 35 for the session)
