The RumFest Trade Show & Conference returns this October, bringing together some of the most prominent names and exciting newcomers in the industry, all under one roof. Taking place Friday 19th October 2018 at the ILEC in London, over 25 exhibitors will showcase their rums as industry professionals network and sample new releases as well as discuss hot topics affecting the spirit in the second ever RumFest Conference. RumFest’s consumer show will open its doors 20th-21st October to host an abundance of tastings, masterclasses, seminars and delicious food. Brands, mixologists, master blenders and specials guests will jet in from the UK and beyond, coming together for a united passion of all things rum. The RumFest Trade Show & Conference has provided a platform for the industry’s newcomers and independent brands for over a decade, attracting rum wholesalers, distributors, buyers, bar professionals and importers to what has become a key date in the rum calendar. With the evolution of the spirit and consistent rise in popularity in the UK, the one day trade event provides the chance to discover new rums, discuss trends and debate over issues affecting the industry.

The RumFest Trade Show & Conference will showcase rum’s versatility by welcoming the finest producers of the spirit including Atlantico Rum, Real McCoy Rum, Mhoba Rum, Rum Java, Rum Pixan, Rhum Depaz and Kill Devil. Across the day advanced masterclasses, deluxe tastings and more will take place to get even more insight into the spirit.

At the weekend RumFest opens its doors to consumers, Saturday 20th – Sunday 21st October, to host an extensive showcase of rum-related offerings with leading brands from across the globe. Ticket-holders will get the chance to immerse themselves in all aspects of rum – from seminars and workshops with top brands, ambassadors and leading industry figures to top mixologists, blenders and distillers teaching the art of cocktail making and the ideal pairings for particular rums. Ticket holders will have the chance to purchase Golden Tot Tokens. For visitors interested in premium rums, these tokens will give those a chance to sample higher premium rums retailing from £80-£200. For the first time founder Ian Burrell will also host a tasting showcasing five rare and expensive rums with a combined retail value of £1500.

To close the weekend of festivities on Sunday 21st October, the Golden Rum Barrel Awards will recognise those making waves in the rum world. Celebrating the exceptional efforts and stars of the industry, categories include UK Rum Brand Ambassador of the year, UK Rum Menu of the year, Best New Rum of the year, Best Single Rum, Best Traditional Column Rum and many more. The nominees for the awards will be announced for National Rum Day in August.

Super Lyan And Jack Daniel’s Launch Tennessee Nitro Tours

This spring and summer London-based cocktail bar Super Lyan will be visiting cities across the UK with Jack Daniel’s Whiskey for the Tennessee Nitro Tours. In honour of Super Lyan’s innovative cocktail the Tennessee Nitro Martini, which was the first of its kind when it launched, the team will be collaborating with local, like-minded bars. For one night only at each stop, Super Lyan will be behind the bar allowing cocktail
fans across the UK to sample the Tennessee Nitro Martini as part of a special Jack Daniel’s cocktail menu. Kicking off in Manchester on 20th March at Peggy’s, Super Lyan will then go on to visit Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Belfast and do a bar takeover in its home city of London.

Super Lyan is the third venue from internationally renowned and multi-award winning bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana, aka Mr Lyan. A basement bar in Hoxton, it takes seemingly familiar classic cocktails and spruces them up with a touch of Lyan magic, with sustainability a key focus.

The Tennessee Nitro Martini is one of the bar’s signature drinks, and takes the espresso martini to the next level. It combines Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey with a homemade cola syrup and Sandows Cold Brew Coffee, which is then pulled through a nitrous keg system for a soft, effervescent texture reminiscent of Guinness. Served in a coupe and finished with a spritz of bergamot, the result is a creamy, complex cocktail that can be served extra quick. The first cocktail of its kind to use such technology, it also means the cocktail can be kegged making it sustainable, and was at the forefront of the eco-friendly cocktail trend.

In each city Super Lyan will be partnering with a bar which took part in last year’s Tennessee Calling programme, and will be working with the local team to develop a menu for the evening. Alongside the Tennessee Nitro Martini there will also be cocktails such as the Chattanooga Cooler and a special serve from the host bar. The line-up currently includes:

London Beer Week has gone digital with a brand new DrinkUp.London app. Free to download, the app is the key to unlocking all this year’s festival has to offer. London, Edinburgh And Bristol Craft Beer Festivals ‘Raise The Bar’ For 2018

Bringing together 17,000 visitors and attracting over 125 world class brewers from the UK, Europe and US, this year’s London, Edinburgh and Bristol Craft Beer Festivals are back and aiming to be the biggest series of Craft Beer Festivals in the UK.

Up 60% on last year, organisers and founders of We Are Beer, Greg Wells and Dan Sylvester, will once again bring the world’s finest craft beer, headline music acts and incredible food under one festival roof.

New for 2018 and a first for the industry, We Are Beer is launching ‘Raise the Bar’ – which seeks to find new, up-coming brewers and shine a light on creativity and innovation. In a bid to champion new talent, an expert panel will independently blind taste all submissions. They will then select the top four brewers to attend all three festivals providing them with a platform to showcase their beer to 17,000 people across the UK festivals.

The Raise the Bar panel includes: Jenn Merrick, former Beavertown head brewer and founder of a new community based brewery, Earth Station, Ben Freeman, co-founder and brewer at Pressure Drop, Jonny Garrett from Craft Beer Channel, and alongside Greg and Dan from We Are Beer.

Potential brewers (under 2 years in commercial production) are asked to enter online at https://raisethebar.wearebe er.com/ before submitting some samples of their beer for panel review. Entry deadline for Raise the Bar is Monday 12th March.

Among the first hand-picked brewers to be invited to the London festival are: Mikkeller from Copenhagen, Denmark, Cloudwater from Manchester, England, and Stillwater Artisanal from Baltimore, US. For Edinburgh, the line-up includes: Lervig Aktiebryggeri from Norway, Beavertown Brewery, from London and Tempest Brew Co. from The Borders, Scotland. The full line up of brewers for each location will be announced in the coming months.

Commenting on the festivals Greg Wells, co-founder of We Are Beer, said: “The festivals are an opportunity to celebrate modern beer and brewing culture from across the globe and give beer fans and those discovering craft beer the opportunity to sample a range of beers they wouldn’t normally get the chance to try.

William Grant & Sons Distils Innovative Spirit at ‘Hackadram’

hackadram logoIndependent family own distillers, William Grant & Sons, is looking to define the future of the spirits through a ‘hackadram’, its version of a hackathon.

Taking place on the 25th and 26th January at Plexal, a hub for start-ups and enterprises, in east London, the Hackadram will see creatives and specialists from a wide range of backgrounds and industries attempt to crack four business challenges.

The Hackadram will distil some of the best practices from tech and start-ups, capturing their entrepreneurial spirit where problems are solved quickly in novel ways through ‘hacks’. There is a loose format to the two days with intensive, open minded creative sessions and the opportunity for participants to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges.

The judging panel consists of a number of individuals who are renowned innovators in their own fields including one of the world’s leading bartenders and owners Ryan Chetiyawardana aka Mr Lyan, entrepreneur Simon Devonshire OBE, who has co-founded and scaled-up a number of ventures including One Water and Zopa.com, and Ben Southworth, a start-up expert. They will be joined by a number of internal judges including William Grant & Sons Global Chief Marketing Officer, Philip Gladman.

The event features four challenges focusing on themes of ecommerce, bartender engagement, shopper targeting and disruptive drinking experiences. Ultimately William Grant & Sons is looking for genuinely ground breaking and game changing ideas to invest in and commission.

Bacardi Unveils Sound Of Rum Series

BACARDÍ® has today announced the launch of Sound of Rum Series, a four-part music documentary which explores the influence Caribbean music has on the world and the intrinsic link between rum, music and the cultures that have combined over time to create today’s the Sound of Rum. The series is the latest iteration of the BACARDÍ the Sound of Rum creative campaign which aims to connect the brand’s island roots to modern music.

The Sound of Rum is a diverse sound and unique concept born from the brand’s partnership with electro/moombahton trio Major Lazer, announced earlier this year. It draws influence from a collection of Caribbean genres including reggae, dancehall and afro beats and fuses them with modern day global influences from hip-hop, trap and grime to create something truly unique. Sound of Rum Series is released to further illustrate and explore this cultural and creative movement.

National Calvados Week Returns For 2017

The Père Magloire National Calvados Week, in association with UK creator Emporia Brands, returns Monday 16th October 2016 until the Sunday 22nd October 2017, taking place within bars and retailers across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
