Oxley Gin Announces First UK On-Trade Competition In Search Of The Country’s Most Inventive Gimlet

DISHOOM17

OXLEY®, the unbelievably cold distilled gin, announces its inaugural cocktail competition open to the UK on-trade centred around one of the world’s most classic cocktails – the Gimlet. Accounts across Edinburgh, Manchester and London are being challenged to invent their unique twist on the Gimlet serve, a drink traditionally made with only two ingredients – lime cordial and gin. The use of sub-zero distillation in a quest to keep the botanicals in OXLEY gin faithful to nature, combined with using only fresh-frozen citrus, the Gimlet showcases this bright and flavourful gin – essential in controlling and balancing the essential cordial element. With the Gimlet’s current revival and dividing of opinions, almost as much as the martini, OXLEY gin will tour the three cities from February through May in search of the unexpected, inventive expression of this serve.

CORDIALLY INVITED
With many different takes on the Gimlet featuring across the UK’s top on-trade accounts – 12% of bars polled the serve in their top 10 cocktails* – from Mint Gun Club’s staple three versions, each prebatched and kept in the freezer and served in frozen liqueur glasses, to Scarfes Bar’s twist using a home-made cordial infused with zara lebu skin, lemongrass, shiso and kaffir lime leaves, OXLEY gin is inviting bartenders to experiment and create their own cordial that will complement the thirst for flavour and unmistakable taste of OXLEY gin. Each bartender will be gifted an OXLEY Cocktail Kit to support their own innovative interpretation of the Gimlet with the winner walking away with their own bespoke, co-branded fridge.

The winning recipe will be selected by Karine Tillard, Brand Ambassador for OXLEY gin, along with a special guest, who will visit the competing bars before crowning the most inventive bartender in each region.

Florent Demars, UK Brand Manager – OXLEY gin comments “Since the invention of OXLEY, we have continued to champion flavour and freezing nature in its tracks. We are excited to see how bartenders across the UK can create a truly adventurous take on the Gimlet, a cocktail that has been gaining popularity and momentum rising 26% in the last year alone as one of the world’s best-selling classic cocktails.”

London, Edinburgh And Bristol Craft Beer Festivals ‘Raise The Bar’ For 2018

thumbnail

Bringing together 17,000 visitors and attracting over 125 world class brewers from the UK, Europe and US, this year’s London, Edinburgh and Bristol Craft Beer Festivals are back and aiming to be the biggest series of Craft Beer Festivals in the UK.

Up 60% on last year, organisers and founders of We Are Beer, Greg Wells and Dan Sylvester, will once again bring the world’s finest craft beer, headline music acts and incredible food under one festival roof.

New for 2018 and a first for the industry, We Are Beer is launching ‘Raise the Bar’ – which seeks to find new, up-coming brewers and shine a light on creativity and innovation. In a bid to champion new talent, an expert panel will independently blind taste all submissions. They will then select the top four brewers to attend all three festivals providing them with a platform to showcase their beer to 17,000 people across the UK festivals.

The Raise the Bar panel includes: Jenn Merrick, former Beavertown head brewer and founder of a new community based brewery, Earth Station, Ben Freeman, co-founder and brewer at Pressure Drop, Jonny Garrett from Craft Beer Channel, and alongside Greg and Dan from We Are Beer.

Potential brewers (under 2 years in commercial production) are asked to enter online at https://raisethebar.wearebe er.com/ before submitting some samples of their beer for panel review. Entry deadline for Raise the Bar is Monday 12th March.

Among the first hand-picked brewers to be invited to the London festival are: Mikkeller from Copenhagen, Denmark, Cloudwater from Manchester, England, and Stillwater Artisanal from Baltimore, US. For Edinburgh, the line-up includes: Lervig Aktiebryggeri from Norway, Beavertown Brewery, from London and Tempest Brew Co. from The Borders, Scotland. The full line up of brewers for each location will be announced in the coming months.

Commenting on the festivals Greg Wells, co-founder of We Are Beer, said: “The festivals are an opportunity to celebrate modern beer and brewing culture from across the globe and give beer fans and those discovering craft beer the opportunity to sample a range of beers they wouldn’t normally get the chance to try.

In our quest to champion the incredible upcoming talent we are really excited about the potential for our ‘Raise the Bar’ competition to give young, new brewer’s a platform to showcase their beer on a UK stage,” he added.

Jenn Merrick, founder of community-based brewery, Earth Station and former head brewer of Beavertown and Meantime, said: “I am delighted to be asked by Dan and Greg to be a judge for Raise the Bar. I am a great believer in opening up the industry to a more diverse group of people – so it’s great to see an initiative like this which will support new talent.”

The Craft Beer Festivals will be returning for the sixth time in London, the third time in Bristol and second time in Edinburgh. Dates and locations for the Festivals are listed below:

· Edinburgh – 25th to 27th May 2018, Biscuit Factory, Leith

· London – 3rd to 5th August 2018, Tobacco Dock, Docklands

· Bristol – to be announced

Tickets for the London and Edinburgh Craft Beer Festivals are on sale now: londoncraftbeerfestival.co.uk and edinburghcraftbeerfestival.co.uk with Bristol going on sale from March (bristolcraftbeerfestival.co.uk).

Edinburgh’s Leon Black Announced UK Winner Of Bacardi Legacy 2018

171121_BacardiLegacy_DSC1979.jpg
28 participants from 10 countries competed in the Northern European finals of the BACARDÍ Legacy Cocktail Competition in Amsterdam. Leon Back from Edinburgh’s Panda & Sons was announced the UK winner with his drink ‘The Queen Street’, and will go to the world finals in Mexico for the chance to be crowned global winner of one of the most prestigious cocktail competitions in the world.

BACARDÍ, the world’s most celebrated rum, invited bartenders from all over the world to participate in the competition. Every year BACARDÍ takes this opportunity to seek out cocktails that stand a chance of becoming genuine classics, like the legendary Daiquiri or Mojito.

28 participants from 10 countries took part in the Northern European finals for a place in the grand finals. One bartender was selected from each of the participating countries to go to the world finals in Mexico, to be held in the spring of 2018. In other words, the participants in these ‘national’ finals only competed against bartenders from their own country, but they did so in an inspiring international context, rubbing shoulders with counterparts from nine other countries.

It was not entirely coincidental that Amsterdam was chosen as the host city of the Northern European finals; the city is well on its way to becoming one of the world’s most important cocktail hubs.

The ten bartenders who secured their ticket to the finals in Mexico yesterday are:

Leon Back / Panda & Sons (UNITED KINGDOM)
Erik van beek / Bar27 (NETHERLANDS)
Didier van den Broeck / Dogma (BELGIUM / LUXEMBOURG)
Harald Gröbl / Mark’s New York Bar (AUSTRIA)
Kacper Dylak / Cinchona (SWITZERLAND)
Carl Wiman / Himkok (NORWAY)
Henri Halonen / Liberty or Dead (FINLAND)
Carl Marcus Erlandsson / Hay Market (SWEDEN)
Anthony Barry / Cask (IRELAND)
Damien Guichard / Velvet (GERMANY)

20171018_0681

Since it was created in 2008, the list of honour for the BACARDÍ Legacy Cocktail Competition has done more than simply put a series of cocktails by some of the world’s best bartenders into the spotlight. It has also become a genuine network of talented people, all connected by a unique contest in which camaraderie always counts for more than the will to compete.

Leon’s winning recipe for ‘The Queen Street’ cocktail can be found below:

50ml Bacardi Carta Blanca
25ml Fresh Lemon Juice
20ml 1-1 Sugar syrup
20ml Martini Ambrato
2 dashes Celery Bitters
Spritz Islay Whisky

Shake all ingredients with ice, double strain and serve straight up in a Nick & Nora Glass. Spray with a spritz of Islay whisky on the side of and top of glass

St Lucia Distillers Set to Travel Around the UK

Distillers-Final-LogoThis March and April, UK distributor Emporia Brands have put together a calendar of events involving its award-winning St Lucia Distillers range, after the initial success of last year’s programme.

Brand Ambassador Dave Marsland and the Emporia Brands team will be touring fifteen cities as they bring together the Chairman’s Reserve range, which includes Gold, Spiced, White Label and Forgotten Cask, the Admiral Rodney, and an edition of premium expression 1931, plus a selection of the distillates from which they are blended.

In 1931, the Barnard family founded a distillery at Dennery, St Lucia. Now based on the other side of the island at Roseau, the distillery has been considerably modernized and new technologies and improvements constantly incorporated. The installation of pot stills in 1998 added considerably to the variety of rums being produced in this highly regarded distillery which received the accolade of Individual Distiller of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge, one of six trophies received in six years – a unique achievement.

With the premise of a flavour experience, the tour sees an approach to the range that offers bartenders and key industry figures invited to not only learn about St Lucia, but ideas on how to embrace the versatility of St Lucia Distillers, from the Spiced variety to the rare 1931.

Cities on the tour include Manchester, London, Leeds, Brighton, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Reading, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow, with Emporia Brands looking to strengthen their campaign as they look ahead to the next instalment of the ‘Chairman’s XI’ with their ever-expanding sales team seeking out some of the UK’s best and brightest to follow in the footsteps of some of the industries key figures, including Lyndon Higginson of The Liars Club in Manchester, Danny Murphy of Aloha in Liverpool and Adam Binnersley of the MOJO Group.

Glen Grant Whisky Toasts Burns Night With A Haggis Cocktail

the-chieftain-3
For Burns Night, multi award-winning Scotch Whisky, Glen Grant, has partnered with The Bon Vivant bar in Edinburgh to create the ‘The Chieftain’, a haggis-infused cocktail named after Robert Burns’ famous description of Scotland’s national dish, the “great chieftain o’ the pudding race”.

Created by Will Cox of The Bon Vivant, The Chieftain’s recipe is inspired by a traditional Burns Supper menu and includes the ingredients found in the occasion’s centerpiece.

Haggis is traditionally made from sheep’s offal (heart, liver and lungs) minced with onion, oatmeal, salt and spices. The Chieftain comprises of an oat-washed Glen Grant 10 Year Old combined with an offal stock syrup to replicate the unique meaty haggis flavour. It is served with a pickled red onion, representing the ‘heart’, a salt and pepper air, representing the ‘lungs’, a turnip cordial, a nod to the famous ‘neeps’ accompaniment, and a haggis rim.

Will Cox said: “The opportunity to team up with one of Scotland’s most iconic whiskies, Glen Grant, to make a Burns Night cocktail was too good to miss. It was very challenging, but we had a lot of fun coming up with The Chieftain and are looking forward to serving it to customers with a haggis bon bon or two on Burns nicht.”

Nick Williamson, Marketing Director Campari UK, said: “With the bard’s birthday being such a well-loved celebration, we want to mark the occasion with the same creativity the man himself approached his work. The bar team at the Bon Vivant has done a remarkable job with The Chieftain and we look forward to raising a glass or two in celebration come the 25th January.”

Glen Grant’s new range of aged single malt Scotch whiskies has continued to turn heads as it secured some of the whisky industry’s most prestigious awards in 2016, including the Glen Grant 10 Year Old winning Best Single Malt Scotch (10 Years and Younger) for the fifth year in a row in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

THE CHIEFTAIN RECIPE:

Glen Grant 10 year old, oat washed
Offal stock glaze
Salt and pepper air
Pickled red onion
Turnip cordial
Haggis butter crumb

The Chieftain will be available to buy in The Bon Vivant Bar, 55 Thistle St, Edinburgh EH2 1DY for one night only on 25th January 2016 priced at £9.
