thumbnail (1)

The Kraken® Black Spiced Rum is wrapping its tentacles around London’s East End for its latest Kraken Crawl. Capturing the spirit of the East, The Kraken has clouded the region with its iconic, dark spirit and a twist on four classic cocktails.

The cocktails have been crafted to perfectly pair with the area’s most famous hangouts, so followers of the sea creature can enjoy the darker side of life as they crawl through its streets and taste London like never before.

For one night only, rum fans can indulge their taste buds with East London inspired cocktails and be hit with trending taste notes ranging from turmeric through to black tea and cockney influenced ‘apple and pears’ cider.

Starting and finishing in E1, the Kraken Crawl will celebrate the unveiling of The Kraken Mural on Great Eastern Bear. From 16th July to 12th August, prepare to be awestruck by a giant piece of photorealistic artwork. This unique piece will incorporate 3D elements to bring the mystical beast to life and is set to turn a few heads. Providing a perfect Insta-backdrop for East Londoners and passers-by, those tagging themselves with the beast will also be in with a chance of winning a range of amazing prizes, from diving courses to mural masterclasses, as well as free cocktails to redeem at the below participating Kraken Crawl bars.

The limited-edition cocktails that have been paired specially with local Shoreditch bars include:

The Brick Lane – The Cocktail Trading Company, E1 6GQ

Pay homage to the home of British curry, The Brick Lane blends dark rum with a range of Indian spices including terrifyingly trendy turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom.

The Great Eastern Street – Road Trip and Workshop, EC1V 9EY

Another hot cocktail trend to tickle your fancy taking cold black tea from the East and swirling it around in a hurricane glass with orange liqueur, lemon juice and rum.

The Perfect Storm – Old Blue Last, EC2A 3ES

A classic for a classic. Head to the iconic Old Blue Last for the Kraken fan favourite consisting of rum, ginger ale and a wedge of lime.

The Poison Apple & Pears – Apples & Pears, E1 6TD

It doesn’t get much more East End than Cockney rhyming slang. Mixing pears with apple cider, fiery ginger, lemon and rum – catch this at Apple & Pears, where else?

Shoreditch dwellers can view the Kraken Mural being created live by the capital’s hottest artists at Great Eastern Bear. The mural will be painted from 16th July through to 19th July with the finished artwork on display until 12th August.

The Kraken® Black Spiced Rum has announced the launch of its biggest integrated campaign of all time, Screamfest – a horror movie-inspired campaign which premieres with an immersive Kraken fright night on 13th October while simultaneously rolling out with limited edition POS in over 2,000 venues nationwide.

Screamfest is the biggest single campaign investment across experiential, branding, trade activation, social and PR the brand has ever launched, following off the back of an incredibly successful year where Kraken outstripped category growth for the fourth consecutive year.

Attendees at the Kraken Screamfest launch event will watch the scariest film of all time screened to the scariest audience of all time: an auditorium filled with clowns. Two screenings will take place simultaneously at London’s Dalston Rio Cinema and Leeds’ Everyman theatre.

The immersive events will feature a top horror film professional makeup artist who will transform the audience into Kraken-themed clowns, special Kraken ‘Inked’ pick-n-mix and a host of specially named Screamfest cocktails including The Bride of Krakenstein, The Oceans Have Eyes and the classic, The Perfect Storm, containing The Kraken Rum, ginger beer and freshly squeezed lime wedges.

Bar owners can create their own Halloween themed cocktail menus via The League of Darkness, a website which serves as a platform for members to engage with the Kraken community. Vendors can also receive a free POS kit by purchasing three bottles of Kraken Rum from nominated wholesalers throughout the whole of October.
The POS materials have been designed to help give bars a terrifying Halloween makeover and drive sales of Kraken products. They include a whole host of branding materials including Screamfest guides, promotional posters, table talkers and bar runners, black lollipops, terrifying face cards, t-shirts, make-up kits for staff and
more.

Existing stockists can also benefit from wholesale kits containing A3 Screamfest promotional posters, A5 table talkers, Screamfest face cards, Kraken mason jars, bar runners, chalkboards to list drinks offers and branded t-shirts for staff to get involved in the action.
Specially selected ‘Hero’ venues in Glasgow, Belfast, Leeds, Manchester and London will be taken over by horror-themed sampling teams, competitions and giveaways, plus a scream activated photo booth with which consumers can engage. Each of the ‘Hero’ venues will be visited by iconic Kraken Hunters who will not only engage with customers but will also bring Screamfest to life by adding value and visibility to the campaign. The Kraken Hunters will also actively encourage entry into a competition to win a year’s unlimited movie pass and other Screamfest prizes via the hashtag #ISCREAMFORKRAKEN.

Kraken has partnered with London’s Time Out magazine and Dork magazine in Leeds to promote Screamfest in both cities where the screenings will take place. Kraken is also putting elements of the campaign in the hands of its fan base by crowdsourcing the opinions of its dedicated social followers in order to determine what they think is the scariest film of all time, and this film will then be played at the terrifying screenings.
Tickets will be available from The Kraken Black Spiced Rum Facebook page from the 25th September, with presale available on the 22nd September via The League of Darkness.

Main Logo

The second instalment of the Liquor Market is coming back to the Manchester Food and Drink Festival this September 27th as artisan, craft and boutique spirits make their way to Elixir Tonics & Treats. First held at the annual festival last year, the success has prompted curator Dave Marsland of Drinks Enthusiast to host another selection of spirits in one of Manchester’s most recognisable bars.

For one day only, the Deansgate based venue will be holding a number of stalls that will hold the likes of City of London gin, the first distillery in the City in over 200 years, as well as the highly acclaimed Italian range of Cocchi vermouth, Colorado newcomer Tincup whiskey and the Mexican styles of El Ron Prohibido rum.

Two sessions are available for the day, with the ticket price of £10 gaining you entry to your preferred time and giving you the chance to mingle, sample and experience a range of spirits straight from the brands themselves. Signature serves and recipe ideas will be available, as will the chance to purchase your favourite tipples directly on the day.

Other spirits available include the first showing of Sibling Distillery into the Manchester area as the young team bring their triple distilled gin. The Welsh Whisky Company are travelling up with their selection that includes Penderyn whisky, Brecon gin, Merlyn liqueur and Five vodka, whilst The Bottle Drinks Company will be showing off the likes of R. Delisle cognac and ‘The Secret’ chocolate fortified wine.

The Kraken Rum Searches For Cocktails ‘As Dark As A Kraken’s Ink’

Kraken

This October The Kraken Rum is opening the world’s most bizarre pop-up bar, which can be found on board The Redsand Sea Forts located 9 miles off the coast of Kent.

The Kraken Rum is offering bartenders the chance to be part of a unique, if terrifying, experience. The brand’s Think Ink cocktail competition is seeking to find a Kraken Rum cocktail as a dark as the Kraken’s ink, a drink worthy of being served in the Black Ink Society’s one-day-only pop-up bar on the historic forts.

Open to interpretation, bartenders taking part in the competition are invited to interpret the ‘dark’ brief either literally or figuratively. Kraken hunting can be a maverick game and the only rule is that Kraken Rum must be the primary ingredient with at least 35ml included.

Not only does the winner have the chance serve their cocktail to press and VIP’s at the pop-up bar on board the forts, they also win a coveted prize given to only the most fearsome of Kraken hunters…

The Kraken Rum Edible Autopsy will also be held on the forts and will see invited guests feasting on the remains of a Kraken corpse as it is dissected in front of their eyes. Following this, a film of the autopsy, and remains of the corpse, will be displayed at The Kraken Rum supported event ‘Feed The Beast’ – a rum-based extreme cake pop-up from with the infamous Eat Your Heart Out food artists’ network.
The competition will take place at Happiness Forgets, Hoxton Square, London on Tuesday 8th October – anyone interested in taking part should email thinkink@proximospirits.co.uk, for full details and competition T&C’s.

The Briton’s Protection Review

The Briton's Protection

Classed as Manchester’s best bar for whisk(e)y, The Briton’s Protection has got it all. On the corner of Great Bridgewater Street, the outside decor gives it a traditional pub feeling, and with hanging baskets from every window, it oddly doesn’t look out-of-place nestled in Manchester. Once you step foot inside you enter the long bar area where your greeted with a smile by both barman and customers. On my most recent visit, I of course opted for a whisky, but they do have other varieties available including Guinness, Staropramen, Strongbow and Carling on tap, and a range of spirits including the new Kraken spiced rum and Monkey Shoulder. Wines are available as well as ales including Tetley, Beartown and Angel Tears.

The Whisk(e)y range

As mentioned, my most recent visit I opted for a whisky. You are handed the whisk(e)y menu (something that has never happened to me before!) and can browse through their quite stunning selection. You can scan there backbar that includes the Scotch Glenfiddich range and Johnnie Walker, the Irish Jameson’s as well as American Jim Beam, Makers Mark and Knob Creek but the menu indicates some little gems that you can miss. Their selction also includes a Czech and Welsh whisky which im going to have to go back and try. I went for a Dalmore 15yr (check out my tasting notes on the Dalmore 15yr here – https://drinksenthusiast.wordpress.com/2011/08/08/dalmore-whisky-masterclass-review/ )

Whilst sipping on The Dalmore, I couldn’t help but notice they have a certificate hanging predominantly on the bar with the words ‘Whisky Bars of the World 2011’. I couldn’t agree more! With nearly every whisk(e)y available, you will surely find something that will take your fancy, and if not, the barman seem more than capable in offering you their advice which although probably mandatory in the job description, always makes you feel a more welcomed.

If your ever in the Manchester area, this is one of the must-see places on your to-do list and when you can pick up a Glenfiddich 21yr for just £7.50, even Jamie Milne, the Glenfiddich UK Ambassador, is pleasantly surprised!
