This February, the Muyu Pop-Up Boutique will introduce drinks lovers to Muyu, a brand new range of luxury liqueurs created by three of the world’s most renowned and awarded bartenders – Alex Kratena, Monica Berg & Simone Caporale. At the pop-up guests will be able to experience a tasting with Alex, Monica or Simone, as well as having a unique opportunity to purchase the liqueurs before they officially become available this spring.

Combining a boutique perfume attitude with the trio’s unique cocktail philosophy, Muyu is created in an entirely unique way offering a clean, fresh flavour profile. Inspired by a trip to the Amazon, Muyu will actively promote biodiversity through responsible sourcing, with a share of profits from each bottle also going towards NGOs doing meaningful work in the Amazon.

Muyu has been designed to enjoyed in highball style cocktails, as well as on the rocks, and will be available in three flavours, each designed by one of the bartenders:

Muyu Jasmine Verte – Monica Berg
Floral, blooming, fresh, sensual and luminous
Jasmine with accents of neroli, patchouli, yuzu and iris

Muyu Chinotto Nero – Simone Caporale
Citrusy, opulent, zesty, lush and mystical
Chinotto with accents of cinchona, oak moss, curacao orange and cacao

Muyu Vetiver – Alex Kratena
Earthy, woody, mystical, intriguing, endless
Vetiver with accents of timur, patchouli, petit grains and cedarwood

Created in a similar way to perfume, the main ingredient is extracted before the second layer of accent ingredients are added. The result is completely developed and complex liquids.

Alex and Simone met whilst working at the Artesian, London, where they led the team to unrivalled success winning World’s Best Bar four years in a row until their departure in 2015. Monica is one of the leading bartenders coming out of Scandinavia. The brand is not only the first from the three bartenders, but also a first for the world of liqueurs which looks set to redefine the category.

Linie The Journey is an international cocktail competition where bartenders from throughout Europe compete for the prestigious first-place award. The international final
was held on Monday, 27 August, at Ingierstrand Bad in Oslo.

Linie The Journey
The story of LINIE started in 1805 with the remarkable journey to Indonesia. It was then discovered that sailing around the world, crossing the equator twice, gave the aquavit a smooth and unique taste. The premise for Linie The Journey is to create a cocktail with Lysholm Linie Aquavit as the main ingredient. The cocktail should also be inspired by the countries along Lysholm Linie Aquavit’s route around the world: Norway, Germany, England, USA, Panama, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, China, Korea, Japan and Mexico.

International coverage
The competition has drawn a lot of international attention since aquavit is growing in popularity. Aquavit has taken cocktail enthusiasts by storm, and it is clear that many are very committed to bartending, Lysholm Linie Aquavit and the competition. “We are seeing considerable interest in aquavit among young, up-and-coming bartenders, and this national spirit comprises an exciting base in cocktails. We have received more than 200 suggestions for this year’s competition, and quality and creativity are high among participants,” says Romain Jourdan, Category Manager for International Premium Spirits at Arcus and the driving force behind the competition.

With early rounds in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria and Norway, respectively, more than 200 participants competed to earn one of the 11 spots in the final.

World-class jury
The jury is headed by Monica Berg and also includes the king of mixology, Alex Kratena; the star bartender from Paris, Carina Soto Velasquez; and Arcus’s own Master Blender, Ivan Abrahamsen. The jury weighed four criteria in its assessment of the drinks and the finalists: appearance, taste, story and, most importantly, originality.

Women outscore the men in mixology
This year’s Linie The Journey is the third consecutive competition, and the first two both
crowned female champions. And this year it happened again!

German Peggy Knuth, one of two women in the final, went home Monday night with the coveted first-place award in Linie The Journey 2018 with her cocktail Eastcoast Park. Knuth is the Bar Manager at Salut! Bar in Berlin. Despite her love for Norwegian spirits and Lysholm Linie Aquavit, this was the first time she competed in – and made an impression at – Linie The Journey.

“This year’s Linie The Journey was larger and better than ever, and the winner, Peggy, had a very personal and excellent presentation, but perhaps most importantly – she had a fantastic drink! Lysholm Linie Aquavit was accentuated well, the flavours were balanced, and it was really a drink that you would want to have again! It sounds cliché, but simplest is often best!” says the head of the jury, Monica Berg.

I did not expect to win.
“I naturally hoped on some level that I would win, but I really did not expect it. But, in my opinion, Lysholm Linie Aquavit and Pandan are the perfect partners, just like lovers, and I am so pleased that I was able to incorporate my own preferences in a drink and that the judges liked it. I also think it is incredibly fun – and exciting – that I now have the opportunity to create my own Linie Aquavit with Ivan Abrahamsen, and it is a thrill that it will be sent on the same journey as Lysholm Linie Aquavit. I have to say, I am very satisfied with the evening’s outcome,” said Knuth.

Self-crafted aquavit on first-class journey 
The finalists in Linie The Journey were not just competing for the prestigious first-place ranking, but also a unique opportunity: the possibility to craft their own Norwegian cask-matured Linie Aquavit. Knuth, together with Master Blender Ivan Abrahamsen, will
now create her own personal blend, which will head out on the same journey that Lysholm Linie Aquavit has undertaken all these years – across the equator twice.

7 drops Pandan Extract (homemade**)

*Homemade lemon cordial
60g lemon peel
1000ml water
500g sugar
20g citric Acid

**Homemade pandan extract
50g dry Pandan leaves (chopped)
200ml neutral alcohol
Leave it for min. 2 weeks

 

A Look At The Linie Awards 2015

Last week saw myself attend the annual Nordic extravaganza, the Linie Awards 2015. The event is the culmination of the best that the Nordic countries have to offer from the world of food and drink, with respective competitions to find the number one dish and cocktail for the year. In its 10th year, 2015 saw it being held within Stockholm, Sweden for the first time, away from its usual seat in Norway as the main support comes from the Norwegian aquavit brand Linie, but this was to show the growth of the brand across Europe, and for the first time included Germany within its proceedings.

Held within Stockholm’s City Hall, the evening consisted of some of the best VIP’s, bartenders, chefs and journalists from across the Nordic countries of Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, as well as Germany attending, with a splash from the United Kingdom as my own country starts to take on the quite underrated category of aquavit.

The first finals of the evening saw each winner of their respective country heats go head-to-head behind the bar, aiming to create a signature serve that will highlight the Linie aquavit. Sondre T. Kasin from Morgenstierne in Oslo represented Norway with his creation Valkyrie, seeing a shaken mix of homemade quince puree, Linie that came infused with blackcurrant leaves and stems, green Chartreuse and Norwegian honey syrup, served over a large ice cube and graced with a blackcurrant branch. Jere Vihervaara of Son of a Punch in Helsinki represented Finland with his serve Hamask, seeing Linie mixed with egg, seasoned sour milk syrup, celery bitters and a sprig of rosemary, all served in a classic coupette glass and a burnt sugar cane and absinthe lit rosemary sprig.

Rolf Bender from the Oak Room in Norrebro in Denmark came to the final with a recipe he names The Scandinavian Flip, seeing fresh red currants, homemade red currant syrup, Pedro Xeminez Fernando de Castella sherry, Linie and egg come together with a garnish of freeze dried red currants. Moritz Billina of Falk’s Bar in Munich put together his Punainenmeri which saw cloudberry jelly, Belsazar dry vermouth, Manzanilla sherry and Linie shaken and served within a cocktail glass. This came garnished with a flick of Belsazar red vermouth for decoration.

It was to be Sweden though that took home the crown of the best cocktail of the evening, as Charlotta Berggren of Svartengrens in Stockholm impressed with her creation Linie in Sight. It saw Linie, punsch (a traditional liqueur in Sweden produced from arrack), lemon juice, carrot juice and sugar syrup combined and shaken, then served into a coupette glass.

A three course meal was entwined with the finals, which also saw Finland take the crown for the chefs via Taneli Myllyvirta of Restaurant OLO in Helsinki. On hand through the night were three expressions of Linie itself; the pre-journey, regular and double cask port expressions, going alongside last years winning recipe from Oskar K.J. Johansson with Kumminjanne. 

Winning her first ever cocktail competition, Charlotta has said this has given her the confidence to branch out and contribute to other competitions in Sweden and become a force within the industry. I say good luck to her, and It will be interesting to see how the UK takes its palate to aquavit in the next year or two, especially when you have the likes of Monica Berg, bar manager of Pollen Street Social in London and Oslo native flying the flag here with her new Linie Honorary Award.
