Patrón Tequila Announces the Global 2019 ‘Margarita of the Year’

DynastyMargarita_onWhiteAfter months of voting from all over the world, Patrón Tequila has revealed that the Dynasty Margarita, created by Jay Khan from Hong Kong, has been voted the 2019 ‘Margarita of the Year’.

Jay Khan, bartender at COA in Hong Kong, created a stunning twist on the Margarita, inspired by ingredients that are native to or influential in Chinese cuisine. The Dynasty Margarita is a blend of the ultra premium Patrón Silver tequila, Patrón Citrónge Orange liqueur, St-Germain, fresh lime, ginger syrup and fresh lychees.

The search for the Patrón 2019 ‘Margarita of the Year’ kicked off with eight of the world’s top bartenders showcasing their very own twist on a perfect Margarita, each inspired by the flavours and culture of their home town. People were invited to vote for their favourite, and the MargaritaOfTheYear.com website showcased beautiful imagery and cocktail videos to encourage people to try the Margaritas for themselves.

Talking of his cocktail, Jay explains: “The Dynasty Margarita took inspiration from the beautiful scenes of my city, Hong Kong. Ginger and Lychee are very traditional Chinese ingredients, and combined with the fresh agave notes of Patrón Silver tequila, it creates a citrusy and sweet margarita. I wanted to bring to life traditional Chinese ingredients and to showcase the true versatility of the spirit and of the margarita. I am so glad that the public were able to see the inspiration behind my creation and grateful for all the votes that made my cocktail ‘Margarita of the Year’ 2019. I’m so excited to continue making Hong Kong proud and showcasing all that it has to offer through delicious and exciting cocktails.”

DYNASTY MARGARITA

Recipe:
30ml Patrón Silver tequila
10ml Patrón Citrónge Orange liqueur
10ml oz St-Germain
15ml Fresh lime juice
7ml Ginger syrup, such as Liber & Co.
7ml Lychee syrup*
+ Grapefruit salt rim**
+ Lime twist for garnish
*Lychee syrup: empty a can of peeled/pitted lychees into a blender. Blend until
completely liquified, then strain through a mesh strainer to remove solids.

Method:
1. Rim a rocks glass with grapefruit salt
2. Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake to chill
3. Strain onto fresh ice in a rocks glass
4. Garnish with a lime twist

The Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition is back with an even broader global reach, as this year contestants will hail from thirty countries and Cruise Liners across six continents, to compete to create a cocktail worthy of a perfectionist.

Inspired by the perfectionists who craft each bottle of Patrón, the competition is aimed at those in continuous search of perfection. Patrón is looking for bartenders who demonstrate its respect for craftsmanship, attention to detail, an unwavering commitment to perfection and want to see these values brought to life through their cocktail creations and presentation.

The Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition is more than an ordinary cocktail competition. Through the initiative, Patrón builds and supports a community that brings bartenders together through the shared desire to make great drinks that also transcend the Tequila category and elevate the sometimes-misunderstood spirit to new heights.

Entries for the competition are open from 7th May 2019,12:00 CST with international finals taking place from September until November 2019. Entrants from the US to the UK, Mexico to the Middle East, Canada to Australia – and many markets in between – will take to the bar in the hope of being crowned their national Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition winner.

All 22 winners will head to Mexico in January 2020 to compete in the global finals week. The grand finals are then also hosted at the home of Patrón Tequila, Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco, Mexico.

This Earth Day, Patrón engages consumers to rethink their cocktails by mixing creativity and sustainability. Showing how to repurpose kitchen leftovers to create quirky concoctions at home, Patrón invites consumers to join Cocktails with a Conscience at The Conduit, the newest Mayfair’s members’ club with a social and environmental purpose.

The ticketed event takes place on the venue’s fifth floor which will be the backdrop to an exclusive sustainable cocktail masterclass followed by an equally sustainable three-course dinner by an equally sustainable three-course dinner designed by the venue’s executive chef Merlin Labron-Johnson paired with Patrón drinks featuring leftovers from the preparation of each dish.

Created exclusively for the evening by The Conduit’s bar operations manager, award-winning mixologist Walter Pintus – the cocktails will offer great inspiration for those consumers who enjoy experimenting in the kitchen with a touch of ethos. Honouring the iconic tequila cocktail, Patrón Tequila kicked off 2019’s ‘Margarita of the Year’ campaign on International Margarita Day, starting a global search for the perfect twist on the classic Margarita recipe. Now in its fifth year, the bar has been raised with eight new recipes from across the globe, each offering a refreshing twist on the iconic cocktail.

In 1939, the first Margarita was claimed to have been made at Tail O’The Cock in Los Angeles and has since come to be one of the most admired cocktails on the menu. Fifty years later in 1989, Patrón Tequila was born, introducing the world to ultra-premium tequila and transforming tequila cocktail culture.

When bartenders in Mexico adopted the New Yorker’s Whisky Daisy in the early 1900’s with a tequila twist and Spanish translation, they created the Tequila Daisy – Spanish for Margarita. Around mid-century, another bartender in Texas claimed to have made a drink for singer Peggy (Margaret) Lee, naming it after the Spanish version of her name. In the 1970’s, a Texas Monthly column claims Francisco Morales invented the drink at Tommy’s Place in Mexico.

Whilst there are multiple stories of its origin, one thing is certain, the perfect Margarita is made with the ultra-premium Patrón Tequila. The Margarita of the Year campaign is celebrating this cherished cocktail by welcoming bartenders from eight cities across the globe, stretching from Miami to Hong Kong, and inviting them to design eight different Margarita recipes using a variety of fresh flavour combinations inspired by their local region. In hope of being awarded 2019’s Margarita of the Year, the bartenders will be ramping up support in their hometowns to encourage votes for their unique recipes, while showcasing just how versatile a Margarita can be.

“The Margarita has been a classic cocktail in the minds of drinkers for a very long time.” says Lee Applbaum, Patrón’s Global Chief Marketing Officer. “We wanted to challenge bartenders across the world to prove that however classic the Margarita is, it is an incredibly versatile cocktail. Each recipe and instructional tutorials about how to prepare them at home are available on the Patrón Cocktail Lab experience and the Margarita of the Year website, which features videos and interviews from the participating bartenders (filmed recently at the Hacienda Patrón distillery in Jalisco, Mexico). The site contains downloadable recipe cards as well as education about the history and evolution of this famous cocktail.

Emily Says . . . . ‘The Espresso Martini’

In her third feature under ‘Emily Says . . .’, the voice to the Manchester bar scene in Emily Puckering looks at the ever faithful Espresso Martini;

A cocktail that has never gone out of fashion: the Espresso Martini. A simply timeless concoction of vodka paired with espresso, this number is the go-to at the bar for a little ‘pick me up’. But how did this infamous creation come about in the bartending scene?

Rumour has it that the Espresso Martini was created in the early 1980s by London bartender Dick Bradsel whilst working at the Soho Brasserie. According to Dick himself, the story goes that a famous female model visited the bar and asked him to get her a drink that will ‘pick me up then fuck me up’. Not a request a bartender gets every day, that’s for sure! The Espresso Martini was born after Dick put together some vodka and sugar with a shot of espresso from the bars shiny new espresso machine. Revolutionary.

The growing popularity of the espresso machine in the 1980s spurred along the name of the Espresso Martini. Even to this very day, this timeless little number never fails to make an appearance in the life of a bartender. Whether it is being enjoyed as a post-dinner treat or fuelling a late night, there is always a suitable time for the Espresso Martini.

In my four and a half years of bartending, I’ve come across several different recipes in making the perfect Espresso Martini. Here is the recipe I personally have found to truly shake up something beautiful:

Glassware –
Martini

Ingredients –
1 bar spoon of fresh honey
25ml sugar syrup
25ml Café Patron XO
50ml Belvedere Vodka
1 shot of espresso

Method –
Pour all ingredients into a boston glass. Add ice and hard shake to ensure a thick head on the finishing product; the Espresso Martini is all about the foam! Double strain into a chilled martini glass.

Garnish – three single coffee beans.

The addition of fresh honey truly gives a smoother touch to the Espresso Martini, complimenting beautifully the smooth finish of Belvedere vodka.
Usually, the usage of any coffee liqueur is suitable in the creation of this particular drink. I, however, feel that the use of Patron’s own coffee tequila, Café Patron XO gives an exclusive touch, and certainly brings out the caffeine kick that we coffee lovers are looking for. For those true coffee enthusiasts, however, the replacement of Café Patron XO with a double espresso will work just fine.

A cocktail that one can truly not go wrong with, and a cocktail that will never go out of style: The Espresso Martini, here to pick you up… then fuck you up.

Patrón Perfectionists Come Out To Play In Bristol

The team at Patrón came around to Bristol last week to host the next round of the current programme, the Patrón Perfectionist!

Hosted at Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the competitors found their way to the South West heat by offering a unique Patrón serve, worthy of impressing the judging panel and ultimately winning a place in the final, held in London later in the year.

Hailing from the likes of Dirty Martini in Cardiff, Be At One in Bournemouth and Salt Room in Brighton, the competitors were joined by UK Brand Ambassador Karine Tillard as they re-created their serve to the panel of myself, Karine and last-years South West winner Steven Young of Academy Espresso Bar in Barry.

The top three will be showcased here today, so in third place saw Brighton represent with Jake Goldstein of Plotting Parlour. His ‘Commin Mathca’ saw him combine Patrón Silver, sustainable sherbet, pretzel syrup, matcha green tea and aquafaba together, complete with a garnish of a tiny pretzel and matcha.

Ben Alcock of host venue HMSS earned second place with his creation, ‘Beez-Ness Thyme’. A sour styled drink that saw Patrón Reposado, bee mix (honey, Aquavit, burgamot, fig, salt and absinthe), lemon juice, aquafaber and chickpea water, it came garnished with a simple twist of a lemon peel.

The winning serve though came from Chelsie Bailey of Red Light in Bristol. Named ‘El Camienzo Perfecto’, it saw Patrón Reposado, pineapple sherbet, cream, lime juice and egg white, topped with Mexican lager, dehydrated chilli and pineapple leaves.

So congratulations to Chelsie, who wins herself a trip to London to compete in the final against the other finalists from around the UK!

For this year’s London Cocktail Week, Patrón Tequila has invited seven acclaimed international bartenders from Miami to Münich and San Juan to Singapore to host a takeover of Patrón Cocktail Lab – a destination for cocktail recipes and inspiration – to create and serve cocktails inspired by their city. Taking place at Spitalfields Market, 3-9 October, the Patrón Cocktail Lab will be a unique opportunity for trade and consumers alike to learn a little about cocktail culture from those who are at the pinnacle of their career. 

In a rare occasion, a carefully curated line up of seven award-winning bartenders will come together in the heart of the market space, over seven consecutive days, showcasing their skills and devising unique city-inspired cocktails using Patrón tequila. The epic bartender line-up includes London’s very own Nathan Shearer from Callooh Callay, Jose Luis Leon from Limantour in Mexico City, Philip Bischoff of Manhattan bar in Singapore, Remy Savage from Little Red Door in Paris; Cihan Anadologlu of Circle By Cihan Anadologlu in Münich, Gui Jaroschy from Broken Shaker in Miami and Roberto Berdecia of La Factoria in San Juan.

–        The Yellow Submarine follows the classic style of Broken Shaker cocktails; refreshing, interesting and playful like the city and the people in it. Using unexpected and fresh ingredients, the Yellow Submarine possesses earthy vegetal notes, whilst fresh lime and spicy falernum bring acidity and a touch of sweetness.

SUNDAY 9 OCTOBER

The Northern Patrón Perfectionist Is Found

The team at Patrón came around to Manchester this week to host the next round of the current programme, the Patrón Perfectionist!

Hosted at Mr Cooper’s House and Garden, the competitors found their way to the northern heat by offering a unique Patrón serve, worthy of impressing the judging panel and ultimately winning a place in the final, held in London at The Lucky Pig.

Hailing from the likes of Alvino’s in Newcastle, Diabolica in Belfast and El Bandito in Liverpool, the competitors were joined by UK Brand Ambassador’s Karine Tillard and Dan Redman-Hubley as they re-created their serve to the panel of myself, Lewis Cooke of Epernay Champagne Bar in Manchester, and Sandrae Lawrence of the award-winning The Cocktail Lovers.

The top three will be showcased here today, so in third place saw Lincoln represent with Beckie Sullivan of The Strait and Narrow. Her ‘Especias Prohibida’ saw her shake and throw Patrón Silver, wasabi and ginger syrup, citric acid, Burlesque bitters and egg white, all garnished with the fragrant jasmine flower.

Shane Kilgarriff of Mr Cooper’s House and Garden, Manchester earned second place with his creation, ‘What The Water Gave Me’. Stirring down Patrón Reposado, German Riesling and rose liqueur, it came garnished with pebbles sourced direct from the Lake District.

The winning serve though came from Joe Wild of El Bandito in Liverpool. Named ‘The Spirit of Sustainability’, it saw Patrón Silver, orange liqueur, lime juice, rosehip infused agave, orange blossom water and grapefruit juice, topped with homemade bee pollen soda water and a zest of fresh grapefruit.

Agave Tequila Another Go: Tequila & Mezcal Fest Returns For Its Third Year

Raise a toast to Mexico’s much loved (and often misunderstood) liquid export as Tequila & Mezcal Fest makes a triumphant return on 17th and 18th September 2016 for a third consecutive year, and is the UK’s first ever and only festival dedicated exclusively to showcasing the very best bits of Mexico in what continues to be the greatest ever agave extravaganza.

The event is to take place in a brand new – and bigger – venue, setting up shop in the Boiler House at the iconic Truman Brewery, in East London’s vibrant Brick Lane, where you can soak in the ambiance, tastes, smells and music of colonial and modern Mexico.

Due to last year’s unprecedented success which saw just under 3000 enthusiasts descend upon the capital, the day will be broken up into two sessions, afternoon and evening, ensuring there’s enough agave love to go around.

Tequila Fest is delighted to announce Patron tequila as one of the main partners of the festival, Patrón Tequila will be returning to Tequila Fest in 2016 as a main sponsor, offering visitors the chance to try their traditionally handcrafted 100% Weber Blue Agave tequilas, experience the very latest in digital technology to transport them to the Highlands of Jalisco and learn about tequila production and the exclusive opportunity to buy and try the ‘Margarita of The Year 2016’, as the Rosa Picante makes its first guest appearance outside of Mexico and North America. This exciting collaboration is a must see for cocktail aficionados and Tequila imbibers across the country and not to be missed!

In addition, Fentimans are proud to be the official mixer sponsor for this year’s Tequila & Mezcal Fest. Proving itself to be the perfect accompaniment to Mexico’s most famous firewater, the brand will be two creating signature cocktails, one with Peloton de la Muerte Mezcal and the other with headlining spirit Patron.

Some of the UK’s finest brand ambassadors and bartenders will be back to hold seminars and masterclasses on the art of Mexican cocktail making, such as the classic Margarita. A line up of last year supporters and new brands have joined the party too, including Patron, Olmeca, Casco Viejo, Herradura, Ocho, Fortaleza, El Jolgorio Mezcal, Nuestra Soledad Mezcal, Mezcales de Leyenda, Herencia de Plata, Amores Mezcal giving visitors the chance to discover new favourites.

Food connoisseurs will be treated to a choice of some of the capital’s most celebrated and authentic Mexican restaurants, with Barrio Bars, Lupita, Camion, Cafe Pacifico, Condesa, DF/Mexico, and all pitching up to serve hungry and thirsty revelers.

And to prove that there’s more to Mexico the creative, cultural heritage of the country will be in full bloom with a mariachi band, folklore dancers, an Aztec ceremony performance, art exhibition by artist Honorio Robledo and a photographic exhibition dedicated to the agave process.

Born with one objective, Tequila and Mezcal Fest aims to educate consumers on how to drink and enjoy Mexico’s greatest export – there will be no salt and lime, slammers and definitely no tiny novelty sombreros.
