Langley Distillery is famous for the production of many a famous gin tipple, including the aptly named Langley’s, Martin Millers and Broker’s. Third-party contracts have always been the name of the game for the Birmingham based company, but now they’ve decided to branch out and create their own tipple, defined by its heritage and history of the Palmer family.

The Palmers heritage can trace itself back to 1805 in Old Street, London, where the family varnish business were to be founded by William Henry Palmer. Once passed onto his son Walter, the business started to transition into alcohol production, which set the foundations for the company as we know it today with current great-grand daughter Angela, along with her husband, sparking the voyage into gin creation.

Taking the Crosswells Brewery site, itself dating from the early 1800’s and built over an ancient underground water source, the brewery changed itself into a distillery in 1920 and has some of the oldest working copper gin stills in the UK, some of which date back to the early 1800’s!

Palmers gin has been created with Angela in mind, which they say is “infused with Angela’s zest and love for life.” The gin itself has within a blend of 7 botanicals (juniper berries, coriander seeds, cassia bark, liquorice root, angelica root, orris root and grapefruit), the exact recipe of which is kept close to Angela’s son Adam and granddaughter Natalie. Each botanical is weighed out by hand and placed into the aptly-named copper still ‘Angela’ (commissioned in 1903) in a specific order, alongside water and British wheat spirit. The resulting mix if left to infuse overnight.

But how does it fare? Well below, I give to you my tasting notes –

Palmers – 44%

Light, subtle notes of lavender, parmer violet and grapefruit zest upon the nose, following onto the palate with a smooth start. Orange twist, with hints of waxy lemon, liquorice and an undertone of earthy notes, resulting in a warm kick of juniper berry.

A cracking gin on its own, but one that’s also worthy to be within one of these –

Ingredients – 

35ml Palmers London Dry Gin
25ml Cointreau
25ml Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
25ml Sugar Syrup
Lemon Twist to garnish

Method – 

Combine all ingredients within an ice filled mixing glass and stir. Strain into a Martini glass and garnish with lemon twist.

A superb gin that really shows off the history and dedication that Langley’s have had, and have finally put their stamp on their own gin to rival the very many they have created for others over the years. One for the drinks cabinet for sure.

Sons of Armagnac Launches Across The UK

Sons of Armagnac is the new awareness campaign spearheaded by UK innovator Emporia Brands and its Armagnac partners Comte de Lauvia and Marquis de Montesquiou. Starting on June 12th and ending on 18th June (Fathers Day), many of the top bars and retailers across the country will be taking part in raising the profile of the Armagnac category with cocktail specials, menus, events, tastings and more.

Some of the UK’s premier dining arenas are also combining their expertise with Marquis de Montesquiou Armagnac by offering specials within Harborne Kitchen in Birmingham and the aforementioned Vice & Virtue in Leeds.

Comte de Lauvia has been the chosen brand to be highlighted within unique serves from venues such as Merchant House and The Light Lounge in London, to The Edgbaston in Birmingham and Petit Parlour in Liverpool. 155 Bar & Kitchen in London, World Service in Nottingham and Wygston House in Leicester have put together at a food pairing menu for the week to highlight the versatility of the Armagnac category.

Retailers from across the UK are also getting involved, including in-store promotions of Marquis de Montesquiou Armagnac within Riddles Emporium, South Manchester, 23 Wines & Whiskey in Leicester and Fenwick’s in Newcastle. Comte de Lauvia Armagnac will be highlighted across all Harvey Nichols stores, including in-store tastings, in the UK as well as Riddles Emporium.

Specialist online retailers are joining in, with 31 Dover offering £3 off a purchase of Marquis de Montesquiou Armagnac Fine, £4 off the Reserve expression, and £5 off the XO. The Drink Shop are running a week-long offer of 20% off both the Marquis de Montesquiou and Comte de Lauvia expressions, and finally Drinkfinder have put together 20% off the full Marquis de Montesquiou range until Father’s Day.

St Lucia Distillers Set to Travel Around the UK

Distillers-Final-LogoThis March and April, UK distributor Emporia Brands have put together a calendar of events involving its award-winning St Lucia Distillers range, after the initial success of last year’s programme.

Brand Ambassador Dave Marsland and the Emporia Brands team will be touring fifteen cities as they bring together the Chairman’s Reserve range, which includes Gold, Spiced, White Label and Forgotten Cask, the Admiral Rodney, and an edition of premium expression 1931, plus a selection of the distillates from which they are blended.

In 1931, the Barnard family founded a distillery at Dennery, St Lucia. Now based on the other side of the island at Roseau, the distillery has been considerably modernized and new technologies and improvements constantly incorporated. The installation of pot stills in 1998 added considerably to the variety of rums being produced in this highly regarded distillery which received the accolade of Individual Distiller of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge, one of six trophies received in six years – a unique achievement.

With the premise of a flavour experience, the tour sees an approach to the range that offers bartenders and key industry figures invited to not only learn about St Lucia, but ideas on how to embrace the versatility of St Lucia Distillers, from the Spiced variety to the rare 1931.

Cities on the tour include Manchester, London, Leeds, Brighton, Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Reading, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow, with Emporia Brands looking to strengthen their campaign as they look ahead to the next instalment of the ‘Chairman’s XI’ with their ever-expanding sales team seeking out some of the UK’s best and brightest to follow in the footsteps of some of the industries key figures, including Lyndon Higginson of The Liars Club in Manchester, Danny Murphy of Aloha in Liverpool and Adam Binnersley of the MOJO Group.

National Calvados Week Returns For 2016

The Père Magloire National Calvados Week, in association with UK creator Emporia Brands, returns Monday 17th October 2016 until the Sunday 23rd October 2016, taking place bars and retailers across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

For some, Normandy’s lush green pastures reach their ultimate expression in the region’s famed cheeses and rich dairy butter. We all know that it’s always been about the Calvados. The magical alchemy that transforms green apples into golden nectar, it produces apple brandy as soft, fresh and pure as the beguiling French countryside from which it’s born. The week long celebration marks the harvesting of the delicious apples for the production of Calvados. During National Calvados Week over 100 bars, shops, supermarkets and independent off licenses, including London based Demon Wise & Partners, NOLA, Cocktail Trading Company, Skylon and 155 Bar & Kitchen, who are pairing their special cocktail creation ‘Apple Turnover’, perfect to be matched with their Beetroot-cured Salmon served with chicory and apple salad, or the Scallops with smoked belly of port.

Other venues and highlights for the week include such Edinburgh stalwarts as Blackbird, Heads & Tales, Voodoo Rooms, La Petite Mort and The Bon Vivant, as well as Glasgow based The Finnieston and Porter & Rye, plus Rye & Soda in Aberdeen. Manhattan in Leicester are also showcasing their serves, as well as The Edgbaston in Birmingham and Bonbar in Newcastle amongst others.

Meanwhile, participating Waitrose stores will be running an in-store price promotion for the month of October, seeing Père Magloire VSOP price reduction of £2. (Original price £22 – promotional price £20). Scotland are covered by Drinkmonger in Edinburgh and The Good Spirits Company in Glasgow, plus independent stores within the likes of Cheshire with Corks Out, The Vineyard Wine Shop in Lancashire, Starmoreboss in Yorkshire, Dorset’s Shaftesbury Wines, Kent based Chiselhurst Wines, Cornwall with North Coast Wines and Wales with Gales of Llangollen. We’ve also partnered with The Drink Shop, who are running free delivery for the month of October on all Père Magloire expressions, as well as Drinkfinder who are offering 10% off all Père Magloire products throughout October.

Highlights of the week involve Soho Wine Supply in London, who will be hosting a Père Magloire tasting table on the 20th, with Soho Whisky Club and Brahms & Liszt hosting a Père Magloire range tasting on the 19th and 21st respectively. TimeOut London are also hosting an evening of Père Magloire on the 18th at MASH London, exclusive for their members and hosted by Brand Manager Matthew Dakers. Manchester will also see Brand Ambassador Dave Marsland showcase Père Magloire at Epernay Champagne Bar on the evening of the 19th, with support from Yelp! John Lewis on Oxford St in London are also getting in on the action, hosting a Père Magloire VSOP and Pont L’Eveque cheese tasting in the food hall, with the offer of a free glass to anyone who buys a bottle!

In addition, Fever Tree are the principle sponsors for this year’s signature serve, promoted within all participating venues across the UK, the Père Magloire and Fever Tree tonic;

Fresh Ice (at least 4 big cubes)
Slice of Fresh Apple

Using a large wine glass or a tall, slim glass, add the ice first then pour in the Père Magloire VS, followed by the Fever Tree Tonic Water. Cut a full slice of apple and drop into the glass.

A promotional video has also been commissioned by Emporia Brands, the exclusive UK importer of Père Magloire and National Calvados Week, which aims to see people coming together from across the UK to enjoy Calvados.

Langley’s Brings Back A Classic With Old Tom Gin

Charter Brands is launching Langley’s Old Tom gin, reviving a classic style that offers the growing army of gin enthusiasts a different flavour profile in cocktails and mixed drinks.

Langley’s Old Tom is Charter Brands’ first new product since the launch three years ago of the acclaimed and multiple award-winning Langley’s No.8 gin. Old Tom is a style originally popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Old Tom offers a more intense yet slightly sweeter taste than a classic London Dry Gin, however, it’s not as sweet as a Dutch Jenever.

Mark Dawkins, co-founder of Charter Brands, said: “We’ve always planned to develop other styles of gin under the Langley’s brand, and our Old Tom has been 12 months in development. The style is a forgotten classic in many ways, but with interest in gin among UK consumers at an all-time high and still growing, the time is right to bring it back with a real focus and strategy behind it.”

He adds: “There are a lot of gin brands using the ‘craft’ terminology, but we feel it’s becoming over-used. The Langley’s brand is all about classic, timeless and quintessentially English gin products. Old Tom is exactly that – we’ve taken a classic recipe and redeveloped it for the modern era.

“The sweeter flavour profile will appeal to bar professionals looking for a different take on classic gin drinks such as a Collins, as well as giving consumers an alternative to the London Dry style. We’ve had pre-orders already for export markets, as well as interest from some key UK on and off-trade retailers.”

The signature serve for the brand is the Langley’s Old Tom St. Clements; a classic gin & tonic garnished with a half slice of lemon and a half slice of orange.

While the labelling reflects the heritage of its style, Langley’s Old Tom comes in the brand’s distinctive bottle, to create consistency. Old Tom is available at 40% ABV for the UK market as well as in a 47% Export Strength, with an RSP of £25 for the 40%. Like Langley’s No. 8, Langley’s Old Tom is distributed in the UK by Hi-Spirits, and will be available from October.

Final Four Named In The Chairman’s Reserve Mai Tai Campaign

Spirits innovator Emporia Brands and award-winning Chairman’s Reserve rum of St Lucia Distillers, are proud to announce the final four venues who will be participating in the final of the current Chairman’s Reserve Mai Tai campaign.

The final, to be held at The Magic Roundabout, one of the cities iconic pop-up sites in London, will feature four venues from across the UK who have been tasked during June and July to promote their twist on the classic Mai Tai cocktail using two expressions of Chairman’s Reserve. With a secret panel of judges on hand to test out each cocktail, the winning bar will find out on the evening whether they have earnt their place on the plane to St Lucia later in the year.

Enjoy a Chairman’s Reserve Mai Tai:

40ml Chairman’s Reserve rum
15ml Triple Sec
25ml Lime Juice
10ml Orgeat
10ml Gomme
Float 10ml Chairman’s Reserve Spiced rum

Shake all ingredients (except the Chairman’s Reserve Spiced) over ice and strain into an ice filled rocks glass. Float the Chairman’s Reserve Spiced on top of the serve and garnish with a mint sprig, grapefruit and lemon slice.

Chairman’s Reserve is widely available, including all online retailers, wine merchants and currently set at £20 at larger Sainsburys stores.

Broker’s Tasting Notes

A gin, specially blended to be dry with an image driven to literally tip the hat to the gin craze of England. Broker’s does just that, the brain child of Martin and Andy Dawson. Broker’s has also won more top awards in international competitions over the last ten years than any other gin. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here, lets scale back and see how it comes to such a high regard.

Launched in 1998, Martin and Andy Dawson utilised the services of Langley Distillery, Birmingham and their copper pot still ‘Constance’, itself manufactured by John Dore & Co, long recognised as the finest still-maker in the world. They set the task of re-creating a recipe (chosen after taste testing against several new recipes) that is said to be over 200 years old. Pure grain spirit made from English wheat is distilled four times before the addition of ten botanicals.

Juniper berries from Macedonia, coriander seed from Bulgaria, orris root and liquorice from Italy, nutmeg from India, cassia bark from Indonesia, cinnamon from the Seychelles, orange peel and lemon peel from Spain and angelica root from Poland make up the 24 hour steeping, before being distilled for a fifth and final time. 

So, how does this traditional London Dry fare? Well below, I give to you my tasting notes –

Broker’s – 40%

Clean on the nose with a light, fragrant citrus aroma followed by hints of spice. Smooth juniper flavours blended with strong orange are evident on the palate. Very dry finish as the spice lingers.

Hits the spot for its traditionalism, but what if it were mixed into a classic cocktail?

60 ml Broker’s Gin
15 ml lemon juice
15 ml Maraschino Liqueur
1 tsp Crème de Violette

Method –

Shake with ice and strain into chilled Martini glass. No garnish.

A great addition, as well as a brand to add to your own drinks cabinet. Even the little bowler hat that adorns every Broker’s bottle can win you over (a theme for the brand that would be recognised for its Englishness – such a gentleman that adorns the label would typically have been a stockbroker in the City of London, hence the name). Both Andy and Martin are active in their promotion, attending many events in their signature bowler hats and as mentioned, winning many awards with their efforts. In 2013, Broker’s was Kosher approved by the Kashrut Division-London Beth Din (KLDB), making it accessible to an even wider audience. What more could you ask for from a gin?!
